Francis J. Parker to Anna L. Parker, 21 April 1862
Fort Warren Ap 21 1862

My dear wife
I have resigned to take effect May 2d (next week Friday) and may or may not see you before that time according to circumstances. I propose to go to Lay's on the 2d about 11 A.M. and have other pictures taken before I doff forever my military dress. Will you make arrangements to that effect with him and meet me there at that time.

I am a little more busy in preparing for my hegiree but not overburdened now.

I must confess to some reluctance / at leaving so fine a command but as it is not much more than I felt at taking it I shall probably get over it.

For the past year I have been constantly twitched about by contending wishes and opposite interests until I sometimes feel as though I had no will of my own but was being blown about the world by the baffling winds of fortune.

If I had the money ability to do it and could make my conscience clear to do it I should like to get out of the country for two years at least and try to keep quiet and enjoy a season of rest in some strange country with you & the children about me but Man proposes & God disposes / and so I suppose we must drift along.

With dear love for yourself and the little ones
Good night
Frank.
