Laforest Dowst
Laforest Dowst was born on September 21, 1849, in Portland, Maine, to Henry and Mary Dowst. His father was a farmer who owned $1,500 of real estate and $956 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Vienna, Maine, and by 1870, he was working as a clerk in a store.

He married Arrazina R. Allen on December 25, 1872, and they had at least four children: Alice, born around 1876; Ethel, born around 1878; Dana, born around 1884; and Orville, born around 1886. They lived in Vienna, and he worked as a farmer and merchant. He became a well-respected member of Vienna society. According to one writer, his “character and amiable disposition drew for him a large patronage.” He supported the Republican Party, and he was reportedly a “true and loyal worker for his party.” He died of an enlarged prostate in Vienna on August 30, 1915.
