Josiah T. Smart was born around 1817 in Maine. He married Julia A. Dowst, and they had at least four children: Ozem, born around 1846; Josephine, born around 1848; Victoria, born around 1849; and Addie, born around 1862. They lived in Gardiner, Maine, and he worked as a joiner. By 1850, he owned $1,200 of real estate. They moved to Farmington, Maine, in the 1850s, and he worked as a master carpenter there. By 1860, he owned $900 of real estate and $525 of personal property. A decade later, their wealth had grown to $4,500 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. By 1880, he was working as a “sash and blind man.” He died in Farmington on July 9, 1883.
