Mary Wilson was born around 1839 in North Carolina to Thomas Wilson and Rebecca Williams. Her father was a surveyor who owned $600 of real estate in 1850. She grew up in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and her father died there around 1851. She married Joseph G. Willis sometime after 1860, and they had at least five children: Osney, born around 1868; Sophia, born around 1870; Lydia, born around 1872; Thomas, born around 1874; Edney, born around 1877; Ivy, born around 1879; and Sallie, born around 1885.
Her husband worked as a farmer in Cleveland County, and by 1870, they owned $3,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property. Joseph died in January 1892, and she remained in Cleveland County for the rest of her life. She died there on August 26, 1918.
