Francis M. Phelps to Jackson Tibbits, 31 May 1864
Camp 38th Wisconsin Vol Infty.
Washington D.C. May 31 1864

Dear Uncle,
It's only a few days since I wrote you a letter and in that I spoke of my comeing home soon and what it would be best for me to do after I was mustered out of the service. Now there is a Lieut. Geo H. Nichols—a first-rate fellow, well calculated for business—says that he has been in a Fruit & Confectionary Store and that it will pay in a place where there is not much competition. He proposes haveing all kinds of fruit &c for sale, and also a first class Ice cream saloon where any lady can come and have ice cream—to fill all orders for parties &c &c &c. He has asked me about Appleton and wants to know how such an establishment will / prosper there and he wants me to go in with him in fitting getting up a first class establishment of that kind. Now what do you think of it.—I know that it will pay. with any kind of a patronage the profits would be over 75 pr. ct.

I dont know of any Fruit Store there or confectionary store, so there would be no competition to amount to anything, but the question is will Appleton support such an establishment. Lieut. Nichols has some experience in that business and says he is going into it when he is mustered out. If such business will pay and he will come to Appleton, I would like to go in with him. The amount of capital needed is about $350. or $400. apiece.

What say you to this. if you dont approve of it what do you recommend / for me to do, for do something I must.—Oh! how is your oil well prospering. perhaps I had better go into that business if you should succeed in finding oil. Send me the papers. Home papers I mean. I am quite anxious to learn how you are getting along.

Write me just what you think about this business. I am waiting to hear what your opinions are on this.

Love to all of the folks

Yours—Frank
Jackson Tibbits Esqr
