Jackson Tibbits was born on January 22, 1813, in Boonville, New York. He married Lydia Phelps on September 20, 1836, and they had at least two children: Catherine, born around 1839; and Sarah, born around 1841. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, around 1842, and Tibbits worked as a farmer there. They moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, around 1851. By 1860, he was working as a “lumber factor,” and he owned $17,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property.
He became a prominent member of Appleton society. He served as a deacon in the Congregational Church, chief engineer of the local fire department, and a United States Deputy Assessor. He moved to Antigo, Wisconsin, around 1881 and reportedly “organized the first Christian church in the place, and raised most of the money for its church building.” He was ordained as a minister in December 1886. He lived in Antigo for the rest of his life, and he died there on December 29, 1892.
