Catherine P. Tibbits was born around 1839 in New York to Jackson Tibbits and Lydia Phelps. Her father was a “lumber factor” who owned $17,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property by 1860. The family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, around 1842 and then to Appleton, Wisconsin, around 1851. She enrolled in the Preparatory Department at Lawrence University around 1854 and became an undergraduate student there in 1856. She remained there until at least 1859. By 1860, she was serving as a “housemaid.” A decade later, she was working as a dress maker. She remained in her parents’ household until at least 1880. She apparently never married, and she died sometime after 1894.
