Sarah A. Carter (maiden name: Johns) was born around 1815 in Pennsylvania. She married William Carter, and they had at least four children: Samuel, born around 1832; Mordecai, born around 1835; Margaret, born around 1838; and Eliza, born around 1839. The family eventually moved to Greenfield, Ohio, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1860, the family owned $398 of personal property. Her husband probably died in the 1860s.
By 1870, she was living in her son Mordecai’s household in Columbus, Ohio, and she owned $1,000 of real estate. In the early 1870s, she moved into her son Samuel’s household in Burlington, Kansas. She died sometime after 1900.
