Lois Caryl (maiden name: Barber) was born around 1830 in Vermont to Hoxey and Nancy Barber. Her father was a farmer who owned $350 of real estate in 1850. She grew up and attended school in Mount Holly, Vermont. She married Aram Caryl in Mount Holly on December 30, 1852, and they had at least four children: Eda, born around 1853; Betsey, born around 1856; Harvey, born around 1858; and Calvin, born around 1862. Her husband worked as a shoemaker in Mount Holly, and by 1860, they owned $100 of personal property. Aram served in the Union army and died of “chronic diarrhea” on July 24, 1864. Lois remained in Mount Holly, and by 1870, she was working as a domestic servant in minister Daniel Packer’s household. She owned $400 of real estate and $150 of personal property. She moved to Wallingford, Vermont, in the 1870s. She died around 1901.
