George Tarres
George Tarres was born on November 18, 1841, near Bellville, Ohio, to William Tarres and Jane Smith. His father was a Scottish immigrant who earned a living as a farmer, and by 1850, he owned $350 of real estate. Tarres grew up and attended school in Richland County, Ohio. He enlisted in the Union army on August 8, 1862, and mustered in as a private in Company E of the 102nd Ohio Infantry on September 6. The regiment spent most of the war stationed in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. He mustered out in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 30, 1865.

He returned to Richland County after the war and worked as a laborer on his father’s farm. His father died in 1893, and Tarres inherited the farm. By 1900, he was living there with his sister Jane and at least one white servant. He moved to Mansfield, Ohio, in 1912, and by 1920, he was living with two younger cousins. He died in Mansfield on August 18, 1923.
