Henry Ware
Henry Ware was born on July 17, 1824, in New York City, New York, to William and Mary Ware. His father was a Unitarian minister who owned $10,000 of real estate by 1850. He graduated from Harvard University in 1843, and he earned a law degree four years later. By 1850, he was working as a lawyer in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He married Ellen Sophia Hastings on December 28, 1859, and they had at least two children: Eliza, born around 1861; and Mary, born around 1866.
During the Civil War, he served as an assistant military secretary for Governor John Andrew. In 1866, he became private secretary to Governor Alexander Bullock. He resigned two years later and resumed his legal practice in Cambridge. By 1870, he owned $7,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. His wife died on May 20, 1877. He suffered a “stroke of paralysis” during the winter of 1884-85, and he died in Cambridge on February 4, 1885.
