Horace J. Wood
Horace J. Wood was born around 1831 in Utica, New York. He married Diana Stratton around 1849, and they had at least five children: Eveline, born around 1851; Julian, born around 1853; Minnie, born around 1867; Charles, born around 1869; and Emma, born around 1873. They settled in Oxford, New York, and Wood worked as a farmer.

He enlisted in the Union army on August 10, 1862, and mustered in as a wagoner in Company E of the 114th New York Infantry three days later. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 11 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. The regiment took part in the siege of Port Hudson. His health declined by the spring of 1864, and the army transferred him to the Veteran Reserve Corps on June 17, 1864. Wood settled in Greene, New York, after leaving the army. He worked as a butcher, and by 1870, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property.

His wife died around 1878, and he married a woman named Susan soon afterward. By 1880, they were living in New Berlin, New York, and Wood was earning a living as a druggist. They moved to Glenwood, Minnesota, sometime before 1905, and he died there in 1926.
