Horace J. Wood to Eliza A. Holmes, 31 October 1863
                                                                                    U. S. Barracks Oct 31.1863

            Mr Eliza. Holmes.
As Asa was not able to write he requested me to do so for him. he is quite feble at present he has been here with me since I have been in the barracks he has been expecting his discharge papers but they havent not come yet. they have probably been lost.

I helped him into the hospital this morning I thought it would be better for him to go there as he woud have better care there than he would here. I think it may be some time before he gets smart enough to come home if he should find his / papers. I shal do all I can for him while I am here but how long that will be is more than I can tell. I hope this will find you and your family in good health. my health is very good at present I have written several letters to diana lately and have mentioned about Asa in several of them so you have probably heard from him quite lately I wrote to Clark Lewis some time ago for Asa and in the letter gave him an order to let you have money and he signed it himself I write this for your benefit as there is a great many letters lost that are sent from here if Clark has not riceived it you might tell him what I have written tell him that / Asa ordered me to write the order and he signed it himself he wanted to sign it so that there would be no trouble about your getting the money he told me you could not get it unless he orderd it if you should want to macke any inquiries about him you can write to me and I will answer the same. give my respects to all my friends tell diana I wrote to her the 29th which she will probably receive before this reaches you. how does Frank get along asa used to talk of him a great deal I presume he and Julian has fine times I hope so. I think if we are successfull this winter we can all come home next summer

from your friend
