Hannah Russell was born around 1842 in Utica, Michigan, to Lockwood and Emmaretta Russell. Her father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate and $850 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Sterling. She married Gilman Graves in the 1860s, and they had at least four children: Howard, born around 1865; Janet, born around 1868; Nellie, born around 1869; and Kezzie, born around 1877. They settled in Washington, Michigan, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $10,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. Her husband died in the late 1800s. By 1920, she was living with her son Howard in Washington, Michigan. She died there of pneumonia on January 17, 1936.
