Emmeretta Russell (maiden name: Palmer) was born on April 11, 1816, probably in Connecticut. She married Lockwood C. Russell, and they had at least seven children: Clarinda, born around 1838; Phebe, born around 1840; Hannah, born around 1842; James, born around 1845; Samuel, born around 1847; Charles, born around 1855; and Frederick, born around 1860. The family moved to Michigan around 1837. They lived in Sterling, Michigan, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1850, they owned $1,000 of real estate. A decade later, they owned $2,000 of real estate and $850 of personal property, and by 1870, their wealth had grown to $5,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. Her husband died on February 19, 1894, and she probably died sometime afterward.
