Lockwood C. Russell was born on March 6, 1816, possibly in New York or Connecticut. He married Emmaretta Palmer, and they had at least seven children: Clarinda, born around 1838; Phebe, born around 1840; Hannah, born around 1842; James, born around 1845; Samuel, born around 1847; Charles, born around 1855; and Frederick, born around 1860. The family moved to Michigan around 1837. They lived in Sterling, Michigan, and Russell worked as a farmer. By 1850, he owned $1,000 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $850 of personal property, and by 1870, his wealth had grown to $5,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property. He died “very suddenly” on February 19, 1894.
