George Houghton was born around 1840 in Sterling, Massachusetts, to Merrick and Sally Houghton. His father was a chair maker who owned $800 of real estate in 1850. He grew up and attended school in Sterling, and by 1855, he was working as a chairmaker.
He enlisted in the Union army on September 6, 1862, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company K of the 53rd Massachusetts Infantry on October 17. The regiment spent the next year stationed in Louisiana, and the men mustered out on September 2, 1863. By 1865, Houghton and his family were living in Worcester, Massachusetts. He remained in his parents’ household until at least 1880. He married Abbie Frances Bruce on November 27, 1884. They lived in Worcester, and Houghton worked as a farmer. He died on November 19, 1911.
