Mary Elizabeth Hastings (maiden name: Corliss) was born on September 14, 1843, in Grantham, New Hampshire, to John S. Corliss and Mary Ann Austin. Her father was a laborer and farm hand who owned $50 of personal property by 1860. She married John N. Hastings in the early 1860s, and they had at least two children: George, born around 1864; and Edna, born around 1876. They lived in Grantham, New Hampshire, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870, they owned $300 of personal property. Her husband died on August 14, 1892. She remained in Grantham, and by 1900, she was living in her son George’s household. By 1920, they were living in Newport, New Hampshire. She died there of cancer on August 21, 1927.
