John Henry
John Henry was born around 1836 in Ohio to Lewis and Susannah Henry. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate and $300 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Jackson, Ohio, and he married Catherine Axe on December 3, 1857. They had two children: Thomas, born on October 1, 1859; and John, born on August 29, 1862. They lived in Richland, Indiana, and Henry worked as a farmer. By 1860, he owned $300 of personal property.

Henry enlisted in the Union army on August 21, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company C of the 59th Indiana Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Vicksburg campaign, and Henry was promoted to corporal on October 1, 1863. He fell ill near Cartersville, Georgia, in the summer of 1864, and he received a furlough to recover his health. He died of chronic diarrhea in Greene County, Indiana, on October 1, 1864.
