Mary Ann Cabanis (maiden name: Lanterman) was born on February 17, 1821, in Springfield, Illinois. She married George E. Cabanis on December 31, 1836, and they had at least two children: Jasper, born around 1838; and James, born on December 25, 1838. They lived in Springfield until around 1845, when they moved to Grant County, Wisconsin. Her husband worked as a carpenter, and by 1850, they owned $100 of personal property. A decade later, they owned $1,200 of real estate and $500 of personal property.
Her son Jasper served in the Union army, and he died on December 9, 1862. In May 1865, she reflected on "how hard it would [be] to see the soldiers coming home and not see Jasper with them." She added, however, that "what they went and died for is gained that should be a comfort to us."
A local writer described her as a “woman of most excellent Christian character” who “had the love and confidence of a wide circle of friends.” A census worker in 1880 noted that she “Bosses the house.” Her husband died on February 4, 1892, and she spent the ensuing years living with her son James. She died in Platteville, Wisconsin, on September 22, 1904.
