June 21
about 2 o clock in the morning the bugle sounded for us to get up we did so had a roll call and comensed to get breakfast while we wer so doing the bugle sounded to fall in we ate as soon as posible and fell in and started with three days rations our blankets (we had orders to let our tents stand and leave our knapsacks) at about 3 o clock we started on we went through a ldil vilige and about a mile beyone we halted the distance we had gon was called 9 miles we stoped there about a half of an hour [?] and the shelling comenced orders came to throw out skerimishers directly there was two Compines went out in our rigament E and G one from Each other Rig in the brigade/we had not advanced fur before we came upon their pickets then the Fun comenced they being behind the stone wall they had the advantage we never minded for that we kept up a sharp fire and continued to advance whitch soon set them to thinking of their legs they soon imprinted trackes in the durt heels toards us and we persuing double quick if it had not been for a litle streem whitch brought us up we wold have captured a batery of three guns as if we had nown of the streem our batery unhorsed one so it fell in our posision we wounded several called one Captain: after skermishing about three or four miles we joyned the Rig we folowed a [?] or two ad then another company went out took two prisoners after wounding them a Cap & a Lieut the Cavelry wer taking/Prisoners all day while we wer skermishing. them that we wer driveing wer taking prisoners by the Cavelerys geting betwen them and the main fourse we folowed on about two miles behind our cavelry for a report the cavelry folowed them to ashbys Gap in the mountins we stoped two miles this side then it was near night we stoped and made Cofy killed pigs hens Gees & turkeys and every thing we cold get hold of we ate super and then came back two miles and stoped for the night our Company went to Guard a house slep in a barn and a buly old time the furst time I have slep under a roof since the furst fredricksburg batle there wer two men killed in our reg and 15 or so wounded/
 
June 22 the armey was starting back they the rebs folowed we fell back slowly the cavelry skermished with them while we [line obscured by paper fold] when we got back where our camp wer they held the same ground that they did in the morning every thing has ben still sinse Except a few guns this afternoon in the same direction. we still remain near Aldre Va we ar on picket today I will now close my Respects to you and the rest of the folks               Your loving
