Albert E. Titus
Albert E. Titus was born on September 6, probably in 1844, in Maine to Weston Titus and Sarah Emmerton. His father was a miller who owned $500 of real estate and $100 of personal property in 1860. Titus lived in Lincoln County, Maine, until the 1850s, when his family moved to Union, Maine. He enlisted in the Union army on August 25, 1862, and mustered in as a private in Company E of the 20th Maine Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania Court House and the siege of Petersburg. He was promoted to sergeant in 1864 and eventually to 2nd lieutenant. He mustered out on June 4, 1865. After the war, Titus enlisted in the Regular Army. He was assigned to Company C of the 20th United States Infantry and posted in northeastern Texas. He died on July 25, 1867, while attempting to arrest outlaw Cullen M. Baker.
