Olney W. Titus to Sarah E. Titus, 18 October 1863
Camp Near Centerville Va.
Oct. 18 1863
Ever kind and Dear Mother
as I have the opertunity to pencil you a few lines I take great pleasure in doing so I am well and enjoying myself quite well hopeing this note will find you the same. I left Dexter the 22 of Sept and have been on the tramp ever since. I am in the 19th Rig Co. C. 2nd Army Corps 2nd Div. we had a hot time the 14th for about one hour but we had a fine position we were behind a railroad embankment and they came out in plain daylight their object was to capture our wagon train which they thought was guarded by/a small force but they soon found out that the yankee boys were there and with force enough to take care of them they were formed in three lines of battle and when the first one made its appearance we received it with as strong a reception as ever one line of battle need to and while we was takeing care of the first line our artilery scattered the rear one brigade took 450 prisoners and the ground was piled with with the dead and wounded and the best of it all is we had so grand a position that our Rig. only lost one man we now have a good position and are holding the Enemy at bay and as things are now a battle may commence at any hour/
I have not seen Albert yet but have herd from him by a man in the same Rig—if nothing happens I shall probley see him soon. I have seen George Messee he is well and rugged. I can not stop to write much more as I am on the picket relief and must soon go to my post.
So good day—
