Michael Clem was born around 1828 in Virginia. He married Sarah L. Crider on October 26, 1853, and they had at least three children: Harriet, born around 1858; Sarah, born around 1859; and Winfield, born around 1861. They lived in Frederick County, Virginia, and Clem worked as a day laborer. By 1860, he owned $30 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Confederate army on March 10, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Captain Cutshaw’s Company, Virginia Light Artillery. Army officials transferred him to Captain Carpenter’s Company, Virginia Light Artillery on September 25, 1862. He received a minor injury on December 13, 1862, in the Battle of Fredericksburg, but he eventually recovered and rejoined his company. He died in July 1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg.
