Sarah L. Clem (maiden name: Crider) was born around 1837 in Frederick County, Virginia, to George and Sarah Crider. She grew up in Shephensburg (present-day Stephens City), Virginia, and her father probably died sometime before 1850. She married Michael Clem on October 26, 1853, and they had at least three children: Harriet, born around 1858; Sarah, born around 1859; and Winfield, born around 1861. They lived in Frederick County, Virginia, and her husband worked as a day laborer. By 1860, they owned $30 of personal property.
Her husband served in the Confederate army, and he died at Gettysburg in July 1863. By 1870, she was living in her sister Hezekiah’s household in Chapel, Virginia. She died there of bronchitis on September 2, 1915.
