Lucy Ann Starr (maiden name: Hills) was born on October 25, 1803, in Lenox, Massachusetts. She moved to Rochester, New York, around 1825, and she married Frederick Starr around 1831. They had at least five children: Sarah, born around 1835; Caroline, born around 1838; George, born on January 8, 1840; Henry, born around 1842; and Charles, born around 1844. Her husband worked as a cabinet maker, and by 1850, they owned $60,000 of real estate. According to one local writer, she was “prominently identified with the benevolent and religious interests” of Rochester. She was a “member of the branches of the charitable societies, orphan asylum and city hospital, and for some time president of the board of the home for the friendless.” Her husband died on November 27, 1869, and she passed away on December 17, 1882, in Potsdam, New York.
