Dear Father & Mother
I wrote you yesterday but I dont believe it went as the envelope was so large and an other thing I wrote it with a pensil and I dont think you could make it out you said in one of your letters that you thought Alfred was with Sheridan if I had of knew that he was I might have seen him for his Army laid beside of us at Spring Hill Sheridan has lost a great many men the last three or four days and Col West who commanded our Brig is reported killed Col Speer lost a leg and a great many other Officers of Genl / McKenzeyes Div. Gent Lieut Pollard is taken prisoner and the company that went with Sheridan of our Regt. is cut up pretty bad. I think we were lucky that we were not sent with them. I hope the [ink spot] ward has filled its quota but then it dont make any difference for they wo wont need them as Richmond is evacuated and Lees Army cut all to peices so dont trouble yourself if Father is drafted.

I saw Tom Cannon and Smallstraw the night his Regt left to go with Sheridan he was well but had not been payed yet. If I was in your place I would not send Herbert any more things if he did send for them because he wont get them. I have lost every thing but what / I have got on my back but I can pick up any thing I want the worst of it was I lost all the Photographs and writing paper and stamps but dont you go sending a lot of things for I think I can make out with what I pick up.

we left our Out Old camp on the morning of the 3rd with nothing but one days rations and forage at 10 Oclock A.M. we were in Richmond our co. being the first one in the City our squadron captured 125 prisoners outside of the City making their way to Lynchburgh. the City is half destroyed by fire I think we will do duty in Richmond at present we are at Camp Lee doing nothing. yesterday Lincoln / was in the city and their was a great time with the niggers. I should think Father might write once in a while for he has as much time to write as I do have

I remain Your Affect Son
