Emory Gibbons was born around 1833 in Arkansas. He eventually moved to Uvalde County, Texas, and he married Margaret Jane Davenport on January 16, 1854. They had at least seven children: Franklin, born around 1855; Emeline, born around 1857; John, born around 1859; George, born around 1861; Lithe, born around 1862; Elizabeth, born around 1863; and Bennett, born around 1868. He worked as a farmer and stock raiser, and by 1860, he owned $500 of real estate and $1,275 of personal property.
In June 1861, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in company C of the 2nd Texas Cavalry. He served for around a year before mustering out.
He moved to Fort Davis, Texas, after leaving the army, and by 1870, he owned $500 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. He moved to Bandera County, Texas, in the 1870s. He applied for a Confederate pension from the Texas state government in 1899. In his application, he described his physical condition as “not very good,” noting that his “right arm [was] slightly paralyzed” from a gunshot wound and old age. He died in San Antonio, Texas, on September 5, 1911.
