Reuben Haworth Jr. to Ann Haworth and Reuben Haworth, undated
None of our
Soldiers to be insulted by nobody, I will relate two cases when the funeral of this Lieutenant was going along a womon of high standing was out on her porticol and when the procession was going past her house she spit down on the officers head. Gen Butler ordered her to be arrested and tried by a court-martial, she was sentenced to two years hard labor on Ship Island to be allowed not to speak to any person and have one servant and a guard placed over her the other case is of a man that when the procession was going by his house he put a skeleton in his window which he said was the skeleton of a federal soldier he was tried by a Courtmartial and received the same sentence as the women did Gen Butler is beginning to show that he has authority and that he is going to use it. one thing I forgot to mention it was that you would make me feel afraid and wish I was at home about half past one oclock we were ordered to tumble out as the rebels were supposed to be hear at hand and go up to the parapet expecting to have a fight the long roll was beat the whole brigade turned out and it was quite an exciting time. I was as calm as if I was going out to drill and among the first one on to line I guess it was only a plan laid by the old Gen to see where the cowards were there was one or two in our Company they could not say I was one the Regiment was onto line in five minutes. I cannot think of much more to write only that I am well yet and I hope you the same give my love to all the folks where you board and our So Newmarket folks. I must close
from your Soldier, son
