Thomas Derbyshire was born around 1816 in England to George and Sarah Derbyshire. He got married on October 15, 1839, and his son George was born on August 1, 1840. The family immigrated to America in the 1840s and settled in Massachusetts. His wife died on April 20, 1849, and he married Mary Ann Linn on March 15, 1851. They had at least three children: Mary Ann, born on December 7, 1852; Elizabeth, born on July 10, 1854; and William, born on March 3, 1860. He worked as a watchman in Lowell, Massachusetts. They moved to Temple, New Hampshire, in the 1850s, and he worked as a farmer there. By 1860, he owned $1,000 of real estate and $400 of personal property. A neighbor later recalled that, “since 1860, [Derbyshire] has been an Invalid he is drawn out of shape by an Injury received from being thrown out of a carriage.” By 1870, he owned $1,200 of real estate and $600 of personal property. He died on September 17, 1891.
