Camp Near Richmond Va Sept 12th 1863
 
Dear Sister
                        this leaves Mayhall and myself in as good a health as usual hoping you are all well at home we received the letters and cheese that you sent by James Woods and they was very gladley recd by us and we are very thankful to you all for the cheese also the letters
 
it has been some time since I have written because we have been marching for five days we left Orange County last tuesday and I suppose we are about done marching now for a while Gen Picketts Division is to gard around PetersBurg and Richmond is the report that we hear and Gen Wise and and Gen Jenkins who has been near the Citty all summer is to go to tennessee we are now campt three miles from Richmond I suppose we will go through Richmond to morrow and stay between Richmond / and PetersBurg I suppose you are having camp meeting now in abundance I would like to be there all the rest of us Brothers is absent from camp meeting and I can bear it as well as they can
 
            I will close Mayhall will write in afew days excuse my bad writing
