Dear Family
I received yours of the 2nd and was glad to hear you are wel I am wel I thought I would send a few lines again I think yo dont get all I send I sent 5 the day I sent the gloves I think that Mail was taken by the gurrilas our chance of male is good now It comes within 30 miles of us by rail now I wrote one last Saturday when at this camp I hardly got done when we went on picket and came in at daylight / then started without breakfast and went 10 miles on top of the Cumberland Hills to clean out the Gurriles they ware troublesom to our teams they captured some few teams and 5 or 6 of the 101st boys but had to let them go but robd them of all they had
we started next day on a scout 5 companyes of the 101 and 3 of the 38 Illinois our company was forward as skirmishes to the right and left of our road if road it can be called over mountains and rocks bushes &c as officers ware scarce I had command of the right center we captured one Whacker and any amount of chickens turkeys apples and some of them big Tennisee sweet potatoes as big as a sausage of beefs and less tuf and better than / I ever ate we had lots of fun and plenty hard work we traveled 18 or 20 miles and got back at dark next day the other 5 companies went out and of us went on a forageing expidition of our own and fetcht in 4 large fat hogs and some chickens and them everlasting big sweet potatoes wel next day all went back to the place we are but company C and H we stayed until night when a team came for our tents and we went the ten miles back in mud and dark to here I am all rite side up and ready to eat sleep fight or run as occasion may require I cant tel much of many of our Company a large number are sick and behind we left 28 at Bowlingreen Ky among them was F Johnson Man Keis I cant speak favorable of Man / I think he hurt him self eating and swearing he is no soldier he dont fill the place of one he was under arrest half the time for disobeying orders Johnson dont amount to anything he lost his drum on the first of the march and since he ran along without a gun and never done duty since in the service he is a clever fellow but he had better be at home where he would be of use I dont think he is verry sick I saw him the morning we left Bowlingreen roasting a large chunk of meat Man he was sick he has been getting poor ever since we left Camp at Cincinatti he eats more than is good for any man and sit and swear the awfulest every word has an oath
