Feb 12th 1863
Dear Wife and Children
I am well at this time altho I have been unwel for 2 weeks I had a pain in the back of my head and loss of appetite our regiment has been out nearly 3 weeks on a scout our entire Division went we expect them in today they have sent in many prisoners 100 waggons with mules at one time they took the town of Franklin I cant tell whether we lost any men or not I was not able to go with them I should like to of been along I have charge of things here I am about well again but not as stout as usual but expect in a few days to stand almoste anything as heretofore /
I am nearly ready to complain of my friends at home I wrote to every one since the battle not a scrach of a pen have I recived yet but one from Jefferson of the 20th of Jan since I may chaw my nails while the res gets letters every day or too if they have writen I cant blame them I gues they dont I shant write any more until I get some our company is increasing 8 came in from Bowlingreen K.Y. since our scouts left I have 19 of Comp C in camp I learn Hiram Moderwell has goan home it is wel he never done any servis anyhow they had better get Sowers home before he dies he cant stand the service either /
wel I hante much more to write you write anyhow and if any of the relations think it worth while it will be thankfully received You may Direct to Murfreesboro Tenn they will come if directed via Nashville I most forgot some Boxes of provisions came to our company Wm Williams got his every thing spoilt but the cans A Stoner his was the best his mostly cans and dried fruit I will give the names of some of our boyes that forgot to raley the time of the fight until they reached Nashville distance 30 miles Pounstone Wil Williams A Stoner Sowers and some others threw away guns an equipments the better to run no more

Evening I expect to mail this tonight s I will give you a short sketch of the way we fix the rebs our soldiers have envent a small looking glass they put it on the breach of the gun by a wire and a hole in the stock they can turn the glass to suit they can sit behind a tree or stump or stand with ones back against a tree and look in the glass at one side and sight the gun without exposeing yourself this way they sit and wath gun cocked / and leviled at a Picket Pit and as soon as one pokes his head out to shoot they pull triger it beats them they cant see any one a soldier got it up and got on 2 thousand glasses one thing more A Stoner got detailed as orderly for Cap Beer he being Topograph Engineer of our Brigade so all AC has to do is ride a horse along and help Beer and carry his mesages Bully for AC
