Camp on Stone River
near Murfreesboro Tenn.
Dear family I am well again and hope you are the same I received 3 letters yesterday one from sis one from Koller one from andrew yesterday I answered Kollers the money in yours came all rite as did 55 cts once before and another time 16 postage stamps the letter you mentioned Dave sent came with $1.25 also another with one Dollar It appears my letters dont get through not all I have writen to all our relations and neighbors since the Battle and got no reply but one from Jef and one from sis I have but little news to write today is warm and nice it has not been cold here it sendom freezes ice to last 24 hours the frogs has kept their music up / all winter there is no hay in this cuntry they never make any all their feed is corn blades stript and bound in sheafs and stacked this is a great corn cuntry about all they raise is corn and cotton and nigers the largest crop is niggers I most forgot the 3 sergeants place I was filling that was reported dead is alive and a paroled prisoner takeing by Morgan in Ky I have 4th a better position not as much work and pay the same 17 Dollars my pay commences from the 9th of Jan all I hate I am cursed with a sword to carry I got a new hat this morning Oh the fixings black Orstrage feather fancy eagle on one side and Bugle in front heavy blue worsted cord twice around my hat with 2 harg tassels all on one hat I send my old Bugle and numbers 101 to George he may wear them hopeing bullets and shells / may never come as close as they have while on my head you wanted to kno about sendeing a box to me no dont send any it may come and may not those that sent some came but all spoilt they lay for months on the way I get enough to eat and wear after the Battle I had all on my back I owned now I have 4 shirts 4 pair socks 3 pair drawers all I drew from unkle sam was a blanket 1 pair socks 1 pair drawers and pants I can borrow clothing it is common to steal any thing one wants and I am as good at it as the rest I am sorry to say Matson Ayers is dead he died on the 9th at Nashville of cronic Diarea their was talk in camp this morning our Brigade is going to Illinois I hope so but I think it all gass we will get pay soon I will send all to you you can send those little bills / 25 or 50cts at a time their is a state agent to attend to the soldiers money it will bee perfectly safe and no cost on it we expect 4 months pay mine will be someplace about 50 Dollars write often let me kno how you get along and if you got any money what you got to eat wear and if you get your money from the county yet if they dont pay you tell them I will seceede after the war I am sorry for Kate if she is alive when you get this tell her Farewell for me I should like to see her but I am many hundread miles south among the rebels no more but remans your Affectionate Husband C Morfoot
