February 27th 1863 Camp on
Stone river near Murfreesboro Tenn
 
Dear family I again take my pen to inform you I am well and hope you are the same I gave up almost of getting any letters from home I have had only 2 since the Battle only some that was wrote before none of the rest writes if they do I dont get them so I thought I would write anyhow perhaps mine may not reach you we have much rain about 4 days of each week it has rained 2 days steady every thing is under water I dont think we can make a forward moove soon some of our men is bairfooted have neither shoes or stockings some are bad off for clothes but it is not cold here the frogs have kept up their croaking all winter /
 
I sent a letter in answer to your enquiry about sending me a box I say you need not send I have clothes plenty and enough old fat bacon and hard tacks and coffee if I could send you some of my coffee I have about 2 pounds now nice browned coffee I dont use sugar any more we draw molasees occasionly I make taffy of it well i must tell you their is a roal of honor established made up of 5 Privates 1 Sergeant 1 Corporal of each Company 3 Privates of each company are detached and 2 sergeants and 4 corporals from a regiment these are to form a company and are to be mounted and armed with revolveing peaces and campt at head quarters these are made up of such that have distinguished themselves for bravery and good soldery conduct those that stay are kept to fill vacancies their names are enroaled / on the roal of honor now your humble servent C Morfoot has his name on that roal I dont expect I will leave the regiment for there are many hungry seargents electioneering I dont do that my name is as high as theirs the officers asked me if I wanted my name on the roal of honor I told them do as they thought best if they thought I was worthy all right I would not electioneer so it seems they thought me worthy this legion of honor is expected to do great things in Battle they are exempt from picket and are to have best of everything
 
write often send me some more stamps I expect to get pay in a few days I can send it safe there is a state agent here it will be safe I will send all but about $1.00 Direct Murfreesboro Tenn 1st Division 2 Brigade /
