March 26th 1863
out on outposte Picket
 
Dear family I am well and as I wrote when on picket before I wil again I forgot part of my letter before I left out a sheat and did not miss it until I had mailed I will try and do better this time we are on front of our lines it is all quiet yet this morning there was some picket fireing last night we had a nice time last week on picket we had some skirmishing along the lines we were out 5 days the rebels came on our lines close to our camp one morning reported 13 hundread Cavelry our men gave them thunder by the acre they left in a hurry / our men found 33 dead Rebs on the ground and took lots prisoners we came back Sunday evening to Murfreesborro and are campt near town we have a verry nice camp all clean and smoothe as a floar and our streets are planted with green cedar shrubs it is nice as any fancy yard I think we may stay here some time yet it is expected the rebs will attact us here if they dont I think as soon as our foarts are finished we will attact them we have 11 forts under way all Rebeldom cant get us out of them when finished
 
the 10th Ohio Cavelry is campt in ¾th of a mile of us some of our boys have been to see them Brink is Capt of Comp D 2nd Battalion John and Andrew Stoner / and Ben Morriss is in his Company and others north of Bucyrus I am going to see them some day soon I hante much to write now I will finish when I get back to camp tomorrow
 
I hante learnt any thing conserning furlows yet I live rite well now we can get light bread now but it costs I was so tired of hard tacks I will spend some for a change one small loaf costs 20 cts it will do 2 meals I have not had an apple this winter until last night I bought 3 for 25 cts they were good only strong of money we will get pay next month if we do I will try for a furlow from headquarters I can get a recommendation that I am to be trusted to come back some other regiments have gave some furlows /
 
since I wrote the foregoing we came back from picket and made a new camp in sight of town on a nice rize we are fixing it nice and planting shrubry all through but wood and water is unhandy I just got a letter from Dave McCochron and sent an answer I put a green stalk of corn in it      C Morfoot
