March 30th 1863 Camp
at Murfreesborro
Dear Family I received your letter of the 24 today I will answer it amediately to begin I am well and harty we are campt close to town now and are fixing up our encampment and replenishing our clothing and equipage our company is small now we have only 30 men the rest are all in Convalesent Camp and Hospitals I just received a letter from ames with yours I expected to hear from that money I sent by this time perhaps you have got it now wel I am still acting Orderly Sergeant and it keeps me tollerable busy to call roal 4 / times each day and make out the repoart every day of all present and absent and sick and discharged and this is done every day
I was some what surprised to hear my word doubted about Wm Williams going to Nashville and Ike going to whip me now what I said I say again and I am able to back it with fist sword or musket I write nothing but what I kno and see for facts and I can whip any D.m.D. Rascal that says I lie in the bargen I wrote Dan that will went to Nashville at the time of Battle and many others I did not cast any slurs on him I named others that went he went on wenesday the day we retreated or got drove back / and lost our Colonel he came back on the next Sunday and the Battle ended on Saturday night thats the way the matter stands I and Will are and always have been good friends I will back all I write. the Forum letter you spoke of I did not write any thing to Myres that he would have in the Forum I cant tell yet about comeing home on furlow I still have some hope by the first of may I may get one things look more favorable on our side every day Saturday there was one Regiment of Rebs came to our lines and gave up another day 60 men they say the rebs are hard up for provision and other things it is more pleasant here than campt in the woods away from all sights but our camp here we can see / the cars and town and can get bread by paying a big price I buy some occasionly the temptation is so great I cant resist ones apetite is hard to conquer after being fed on hard tacks so long I will close and send you a song it is the best description of a soldiers life I can give and if any of our Coperheads there dont like it they can lump it
Dont be alarmed about my writeing I tell just what I kno to be so by good authority or personal knoledge Will did help bury J More he was buryed on Tuesday 7 days after he was kiled and is now going to be sent home there is a case on the way for him / I must close and boil some meat we go on picket in the morning we have sharp times on picket the rebs come and fire at our sentinals I dont stand on a post but I have to go the rounds 2 or 3 time in 24 hours to visit the sentinals I caught one asleep the last time we were out I did not report him no more but remain
