Dear wife and children
I wrote yesterday and today I got a letter from you so I must write today
today brings a little news to old saying is every day brings something new shure it did for it brought me your Photograph Picture and I was much pleased and shal try and keep it as good as i can I have no way to keep things only in my knapsack I was glad to see your picture but I would like to see you better but the likeness is better than nothing it a verry good picture
when you get mine then you may look at the hardest / looking scamp to be found I am glad you got the money all I sent I will send again when we get paid that will be sometime in may if the Rebs dont chace us away yesterday afternoon we had orders to be ready at a moments notice to march I learnt cecretly that the rebs wer comeing on us and I new our cavelry had been going all night and day mooveing out strong then late last night I learnt by a Provost Gard that the cavelry captured a Brigade of Rebs 4 regiments and brung them in last night and that was all the force they could finde I think they must be getting thined for our men have taken so many and lots desert
You say some of our relations are lathering me like the D.L. / let them fire away in the rear I dont care a dam for anybody but you and the children Perhaps some of them may spend some of their presious time in Dixey and eat sow belly and hard tack and pull off their shirts 1 or 2 times a day to pick of the greybacks as we call the lice
well mam keep good cheer and I do the same i dont believe they will give furlows here not at present if I dont come on furlow when I do come it will be to stay I must tell you Alf McKinney is here he is only about 3 fourths of a mile from us A Stoner saw him yesterday I am going over if I can get a pass this evening he belongs to the 4th Regulars Cavelry he is teamster /
I have but little more to write this time I feel delited that you have undertaken to write and hope you can continue as I do I will write often I wrote a letter to Uncle Robert Morfoot and he answered it I have not writen to him since cant Jef and Sis write some to I am glad to get some from them too and george one thing more if you want annother of my ugly pictures I will get one the first opertunity they only cost $1.00 here
write often let me kno how you get along and have you got your cows yet I suppose the young cow must come in soon if not aredy /
Please send me a few one cent stamps and I will send you some nashville and Louisvile papers we get them daily here I got the Journal that had the Campaign of Crawford Co in it I suppose when Olentangy and Winchester is bombarded from the gunboats that it will create a great confusion and a troubleing of the waters in Whetstone
tell the boys to work and be industrious if I once come home I will bring something for them from dixey
