Dear Wife and Children again I will write to you to inform you I am well as usual and hope you are the same I have been putting off writeing this week expecting to get a letter from you every mail but none came so I will write one I have nothing new to write as I kno we are still in our foart and I think we will winter here we have our shanties fixed so we can keep prety comfortable as the cold is not great here it is warm yet only some frost at night one of our mess has left us and got a team to drive his name is John Myers from Oceola so Fred and I are alone I have a bunk alone now /
 
well it appears the Campaign is over Shearmans men have goan back the roads are so bad and the railroads destroyed our men cant follow up Brag yet on account of supplies things are quiet and not much to do I am going to try to get a furlow I spoke to the Lieutenant today he is going to make one out this week and start it if it goes through I come home if not all right it has to go to the Colonel then through a string of Generals it may be 2 or 3 weeks getting around so I wont count on it until I get it if I come you will see me so dont make much calculations we got a Journal yesterday I see by it the chaplain has arrived so I suppose you got your money and the watch I tied a ring on it I have 3 rings on hand I will send one it is one I got from a prisoner and a one Dollar bill it is / a good one of theirs he gave it to me for a chew of tobacco and the ring I gave a small piece for I have a ½ Dollar in silver I got from one of the prisoners for about half tinful coffee he said it was the first coffee he had saw for 12 months I saw 150 Officers they dont look like ours many have entire hoamspun clothing we see daily odd sights here women with there short narrow skirts splashing in the mud and 3 or 4 big dogs and 1 or 2 sluts trotting after this is a great place for dogs and poor people some tarnel silk and velvet Ladies they are cesesh every time another thing I will mention Mr Howbert was here he appeard glad to see us he is on his way to Chattanooga to attend to gathering up the Ohio wounded and take them back I will close this if I succeed / to get a furlow I expect to get north for newyear dinner I wont make much calculations yet you continue to write perhaps they may come through better soon some got letters today that was mailed 6 weeks ago    Direct
