Winchester July 28th 1863
 
Dear Family again I will write to you I am well and hope you are the same I have just came in from our morning drill it is verry warm this morning and after the excersize I cant write verry well perhaps you can understand what I intend to begin with I got some new clothes pants and shirt then that hante all I got some greenbacks yesterday and it does me good to think I can help you to some once more I got 68 Dollars I have paid my debts and bought a pocketbook for $1.25 and some other things I had knead of I send you 50 Dollars we send a draft on Gormlys Bank with a list of the mount sent by each one all you have to do is to call at the Bank it is sent to you / our money is gave to the Paymaster he sends a draft of deposit of some kind to Louisville they send a draft on Gormlys Bank for the whole amount he pays it out according to the list if it dont go through Unkle Sam is good for it I have paid the expence on yours 1 cent on the dollar I am only sorry I could not send more fifty Dollars will by lots for you anyhow I want you to live as well as your means will allow I cant expect to live verry tall here I did buy a pie last evening it costs 30 cts but our crackers had some worms in and our sowbelly is rather lively a pie or a few cakes dont go bad occasionly I intend to save as much as I can handy every little thing is so high but i think a few more months will bring this trouble to a close if our armies keep gaining ground as they have of late I look forward / to that day when when the joyful tideings of peace is proclaimed when we can return home. Mam one little favor I will ask when you get that money I would like if you would send me a silk hankership handkerchief I have none now mine Mother sent last winter got stolen or lost it was about worn out anyhow I dont want a verry large one you can send it by mail that is all I want now.
 
I expect this letter will reach you before the money or draft gets their you can enquire any time use it as you think best
