Sunday 17th of Jan 1864
Dear Wife and Children amidtst many and trials and tribulations I reached here Saturday night at 11 Oclock I got to Cincinati the next morning after I left but was all day and night getting to Louisville then could not cross the Ohio for ice and had to go down to New Albany to cross got to Louisville in time to miss the Nashville train then lay over until next morning by much crowding and and some big words got on the train reached Nashville after dark went to the depo at 3 A.M. but no go train all full not room for a mouse so with about one hundread / disapointed went back staid until one Oclock Saturday morning then I got on sat there until 4 then started for Bridgeport got to Stevenson at 6 sat on top of frait car until 10 and verry cold I found the boys all right this morning I found about 6 letters one from Rose one from Dave one from Williams one from your self well I dont kno what to write I expect to get a new supply afterwhile as you kno I talked all out when at home I suppose you felt sort of forsaken when I left I felt bad at first but I feel all right again I was anxous to reach my regiment so now I am at my old table writeing again the sun is warm it is warm as may day now but it has been prety cold here / we have not been paid yet and no sines of it yet I have some money left yet I will send a little of it back I had good luck comeing down I mixed in with some new soldiers at Collumbus and kept with them to Louisville so it cost me nothing to there but I was glad to get out of their croud they were so green and noisy and drunk one thing I wish to say you kno I did not bid the children the girls good by I could not that was the hardest of all so I let it pass I hope you ar as content as I am now I feel as indipendent as a hog on ice again i will close this and write more next time write let me kno how things go if any body is mad glad or sad and if ames got the certificate for the widow it was sent amediately after they got my letter and about Lizey Mccreary I did not get to see / Thos and Dan so tell them Goodby for me I should of liked to saw Dan as we got but little talk but so it goes no more
