My Dear Wife
To day I will get a letter wrote to you to let you know that the letter which you did me the honor of writing to me on the 2. of June came safely to hand and it gave me greate pleasure to hear from you to hear that you are still in good health And I hope you will remain so I am well and I hope few lines will find you and the childrain the same I will tell you that we have been on a scout we crost Appomattox river at night and next day we came behind pitersburg Fighting was going on all the way / till we came within sight of the city we was in front of the rebels brestworks and the artilery was orderd th to the front and all the man that had rifels but it was not long till our atilery was dismounted by the rebels fier But as soon as our artilery was dismounted all the man that had rifels was orderd to make a charge and it was dun and we took the brestworks from the rebels and one canon and many prisners and after we got on the other side of their brestworks the rebels lost 3 man to our one and when we came within 600 yards of the City the rebels got Reinforcet and we had to fall back we oly had 4 Regements of Cavalry and we / had to leave the City without going in which whent mighty hard for us after runing thrue the rebels fier and taken the brestworks but the rebels lost a good many man we only had one man killed in our company
Dear Wife I have seen inoff since I am out I donet like to see any more Dear Wife let me know what the reason is that I donet get an answer from him Father Dear Wife I canet say when we get payet off and another thing I will tell you donet pay them 10$ to Frounet Frounet
