Edward L. Beck to Charles Beck, 8 April 1864
Head Quarters Provost G.—
Camp Humphrey Apr. 8
Dear Father. I have not written, or had any letters from you in a good while, so I thought I would pen a few lines to let you know that I am well and in the land of the living yet and I hope if these fiew lines reacsh you they will find you all in the full enjoyments of health. You will see by the headding of this that we are still at our old place and I hope when we leave it we will leave for home Old Abe Lincoln is here reviewing the Army of the Potomac he reviewed our Division today there was about 5 Corps reviewed / today right in front of Fredricsburg in sight of the Rebs but a little to far off for them to shoot at us or else I suppose we would have had to quit the place The weather is middling cold and chilly here these fiew days it snows or rains about evry 3rd day There is continual rumors among the boys about being discharged some will say they heard that we would be sworn out of the service by the last of Apr but I dont believe that we will leave the field before our time expired. I have gained 20 lbs since I came out I weigh 140 lbs now and when I was at home I wheighed 120. /
I understand that they are going to put up Machine Shops in Northumberland if that is so it will be a splendid place to get into a job, as there is not much news to write about so I will think about closing for the present by asking you to forgive me for not writing sooner and answer soon
from your affectionate Son
