Good morning Dear Ruth
and children are you all well i hope you are i am well and verry glad that i have a fare prospect of geting home to my little family in side of 3 weeks and to stay no going back to the wars again no no ill never go a way any more to bloody battle fields whare the cannon doth roar and whare many a brave comrad has fell by my side in the prime of life beauty…(i was spaired and i left them alone in there glory / yes i marched on—on to other battle planes whare the ground was allmost covered with the dying and the dead and grass and earth cimsen with precious patriot blood and amid all this i was unhurt untill i had pased through 14 battles and many skirmishes O how much i have to be thankful for, yes my heart is full ore flowing to my blessed Jesus for thus spairing my poor life. O may yours be spaired and mine that we may yet spend a few years in hapyness ear we leave this green beautiful earth for heaven 
 
O my dear Ruth you wanted me to write to you every Sunday and i will but i think we will not have many more Sundays to spend so far from each other O how many lonesom ones we have spent
 
well i want to think of some thing more pleasent yes yes i must rest my arm and wipe a way the falling tears of mingled anguish and joy. (will finish this afternoon)
 
well i will write a few lines more there is about 4 soldiers to start up to Davenport tomorrow / going to be discharged [torn] non vetrans and recruit i will be discharged hear—our discharges will have to be sent to Gen Cirtes at Milwalk Wisconcen to be sined which will take some 10 or 12 days and then maby we will have to go to Davenport to get our green backs so you see i cant give much of an idea how soon i will start for home now Ruth dont look for me till you see me comeing maby i will catch you all asleep again by tomorrow eavening i will know more about my destiny pleas write ofton while you can. i remain fervently yours J S
