Good morning Dear Ruth and Children i am verry thankful that i am well and got through safe…i did not expt expect to write to you from this place but alas various are the visitudes of life i allmost got a discharge at fort Schylar but not quite and had to be transfered to old cold state verry much a gainst my will / we left Ft. Schuyler wednesday the 5th and arived here Monday the 10th we found the people all in a high glee of jubilee over the glorious news just received from Gen Grant of Lee and his whole army surrendering to him i shall put right in for my discharge and i think i will get one soon i have been to the Doctor in charge and he booked down all the battles that i have been in and a little of every thing elce to / numerous to mention maby we can emigrate to Ill yet this spring if i hurry up the cakes
i know i had ought to have been at home before now but gods will be done may god bless us forever and bring me speadily home
