Dear Ruth and children
i am well hopeing these few lines may find you all the same. i was happy to hear from you, and verry thankful to know that you ware all well i received your letter thursday eavening the 27th i would not write fryday because it is a [?] day (maby all a notion)
 
i expect we better give up going to Ill untill fall i will shurely be at home before then and help to get ready i did want to go this spring and rais a crop this  summer but it is geting late and i am not at home 
 
i received that kind letter with the one dollar and stamps in it this is the last stamp and i have one cent of the money left we received the news of Johnsons Surrender this morning we all think the war must soon come to a close god speed the happy time O how many hearts will be made happy then Ruth what is John Walkers post office address i want to write to them i could not because i did not know whare to direct to i expect they think hard of me they it cant be verry far from hear to whare they live 
 
Philander i am afrade you will cut yourself that is a big price for choping wood i have cut lots of it for 25 cts pr cord well i did not get home to help eat them taters and aples well therefore there was the more left for my dear and much loved family is toty as fat as ever how are Sibys eyes and Prinnys irrisiplus i way weigh one hundred and seventy one lbs how much do you way Phy
 
Ruth how much do you weigh i cant tell how soon i think i will be at home for i have been disapointed so much that i wont set / any time again but will do all in my power to get home as soon as i posibly can i believe if i had not been transfered from Ny i would have got my discharge and been at home before now that Dr in charge discharged men that this one would not think of dischargeing
 
they talk of brakeing up all of these Hospitals hear and takeing the patience up to Davenport 140 milds up the river my arm is geting better you can see the differance in my writeing your ever affectionate John G Scoville
