John G. Scoville to Ruth C. Scoville, 24 July 186X
Memphus tennisee July 24

i will write a few lines to Ruth Scoville to let her know that i am well praying that you all are well and hopeing cincearly that you are blessed with the common earthly comforts of life
What is life What is welth
What is honor What is name
if one is alone in the world
but what is death
the poet sayes, it is not death to die…well i do not want to live allwayes i ask not to stay whare you know the ballance O if i could hear you sing it once more yes (i think i will)

Sumer is passing, so is life Autumn is comming, so is death…death well the only way that i know is to be prepared for it allwayes and then tis sweet to die to leave earths troubles and sorrowes yes leave them behind and go to that land of spirits brite, whare sorrow never comes tis rite to be ready and then if we have have any time to spend let us spend it in usefulness, yes in (usefulness) i mean it then the question arises what is usefulness, well you can it i think that i could but pleas anser it for J G Scoville

(have the time to say all that i could say if i was there with thee my dearist the idle of my heart the one that i promist to protect through sickness and health
Summer is passing some say i cannot help thinking of it well i had a dream the other nite that troubles me some i will tell you what it is some time
