Laura Olive Scoville was born on November 18, 1844, in Ohio to John G. Scoville and Ruth Chapman. Her father was a carpenter who owned $400 of real estate and $200 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Milan, Ohio, until the 1850s, when they moved to Brighton, Iowa. She attended school there, and she married John Walker on September 18, 1862. They had ten children, including: James, born around 1864; Jennie, born around 1866; Princess, born around 1868; Sarah, born around 1872; Lillie, born around 1876; John, born around 1878; and Charles, born around 1881.
They lived in Ohio until the mid-1860s, when they moved to Illinois. By the mid-1870s, they were living in Tisdale, Kansas, and her husband was working as a farmer. By 1900, they were living in Richland, Kansas. Her husband died in 1901, and by 1910, she was living with her son Charles in Richland. A local writer described her as a devout Methodist, a “good mother and companion, [and] a true friend and neighbor.” She died near Burden, Kansas on September 2, 1923.
