Dear and ever affectionate wife and children i am well at this time hopeing these few lines may reach you in reasonable health. we are at town on provo gard this week we are expecting a fite thear hear before long our men have fiteing some near hear Gen Hulbert went out with his division last week in the vicinity of holly Springs some 25 milds east he was attacted and driven part way back by 30 thousand rebbels we as soon as we herd it went to work and put our large seage guns on our hy brest works then finished some short places of the earth works that negroes and prisioners had not quite finished our gun boats are on hand to. So if hulbert can draw them we will give them a warm reception of some grape canister and musketry the cavelery have brought in some 30 or 40 prisioners yesterday if they take this city they will find it in ashes enough on that subject. tis raining we are in a large brick Secesh all around us, but we have dis armed them let a man chear for Jeff or the Southern confederacy and a ball goes through him we permit the ladyes to wave there handkerchiefs and that is about all boat loads of prisioners all most dayly are going down to be exchanged O my sweet Ruth what i would give if i met some boat going up to Ohio yes to my dear and sweet little cubs there but i must have patience yes to indure all things. O Ruth pray for poor me i will come to your asistance as soon as i can pleas write to your affectionate husband untill death
