dear companion
and children i take pen in hand to inform you that i am well enough to stand gard. i was on last nite in the morning the snow was 5 inches i cincearly hope these lines will reach you injoying good health. this is a cloudy dreary Sunday to me but soldiers have something to do. our reg has a poor set of officers therefore we are not half drilled yet the health of the reg and company is on the mend a illinois / regment came hear last night the fighting is being done up in this state verry fast we talk of taking our new years dinner at St Louis. O how i would like to take a walk in Lafayette Park, that beautiful and grand place, or Jefferson barracks those two places are the grandest and most sublime of any that i have seen yet in all my little travels. Ruth i wish you would rite whare and what house you live in and if it is a warm house or not. our houses are not verry warm but the weather is not verry cold yet our next pay day is the 1st of Jan, then we settle up with uncle Sam. well it is super time and my feet is cold so i will close for this time

Dec 23 61 this is a beautiful morning clear and cold dinner is ready and i cannot half write the war news is still favorable well i must read a little, this afternoon, drill some, chop wood some, write some, the snow is melting, but it will freze verry hard tonight. well Jim Lane has got old price at last Phi if you was here you could cross the river on the ice and desert for ther is no gard on that side but i think we will have some there before long. well the horn blowes and i must close write ofton, give my respects to pap and all the ress Lol be a good girl and you will get your reward. your affectionate farther untill death JGS
